Can anyone advise me please on what they think is the best all round spade.

I bought quite an expensive Border Spade from a garden centre a few weeks ago (it wasn't cheap) & it's bent already!

I'd like something a little smaller that a normal spade & obviously lightweight, your input please?

a draper mini spade(30" long) is ideal...cost = £12 - £15....most detector dealers sell them and ebay....byron

Hi Kris

Ive been through all sorts of spades in my time. but im really happy with my recent one.


I bought a B&Q full sized stainless steel shovel for a tenner and turned it into a spade,

Its now 3 foot long, if your handy with an angle grinder its easy ! grind off the rivet that holds the handle to the shaft then cut 6 inchs off the yellow fibre glass shaft then use the hole in the handle as a guide and drill a hole str8 through use a nut and bolt then round off with the grinder.
The blade end cover the area you want to cut with masking paper mark out the shape you want then grind to shape

Its a bit heavier than id like but its very very strong

Thank you guys, I have just ordered the black & yellow Draper from Detector Distribution so I'll see how I get on with that!  Smiley

Can't believe I've bent that expensive one already .....

Kris, just saw your post. I can get the Draper mini shovel from a local tool stores for under a tenner. Aint it always the same? lol.

Hi all

If anyones near Resolven market one of the stalls sell a Draper Mini spade copy for Under £4 Des, (kane) would know the exact price) like the Draper not for  really heavy use but great for Beach detecting due to its light weight weight

You can keep ya modern tat.
 I use an Olde cut down garden spade from possibly the 40`s or 50`s.
Good honest British Steel. The shafts been shortened too.I found it in an olde allotment discarded ,along with the fork.
I `ve had it ,must be 20 years now and it shows no sign of breaking or bending.
 These modern Stainless jobbies "Look" the biz , but most are Cheap inported Chinese stainless steel thats in reality, Rubbish.

Bugger, I just bought one & it arrived Saturday morning from Detector Distribution.
