The subject of the value of coins- namely a noble- came up in discussions last night and I was surprised that nobody knew how much it was worth- Including myself , well as promised heres how it works:-

The Noble is Eight shillings 4 pennys (D)    8/4             or 100D

Scrap that its too long and complicated heres the link

Rob, it appears that the noble also started at 6/8 or 80p, it was only increased to the higher value due to the fact of the value increase of gold at the time, but interesting all the same........................ Wink

You are right Data, it was one third of a pound, strange value but at the time it was a professional fee (solicitors and the like) , so that is what they charged for their time.
