Hell Paul if my memory serves me correctly there are 50 plus castles in Herefordshire if not more. Any chance of a clue. Just out of the blue the ones I can think of near you are Dorstone, Clifford, Castleton, Eardisley, Almeley, Bredwardine, Moccas, Newton, Evan Gwynne for a start.

Now that one I can do...   Longtown Doc Smiley

Here's the inside view and the view looking up from the ground level at the upper class bedroom privvy opening, must have been a bit drafty...  wouldn't have been a good idea to hang around that part of the castle to long...

Is that the Kington Castle that moved 500 yards ( and no one knows why ) between the First detailed OS sheets and the second detailed OS map. Would never have got it Paul.

i think some of these  old os maps arnt very accurate paul ,,,a example is that i tect 1 farm {which granted has a lot of medi history and finds }and on the first os maps it says in 1 field {CASTLE SITE OF}  but there aint 1 there and never has been apart from on the early os map.

A lot of moated sites were refered to as castles paul. HA,s guess is that over 40% of these from documentation have disappeared from the record. Found a new Motte and Bailey and A Moated Court Site In One parish alone recently.

I detected on a supposed castle site (shown on the new OS maps), turns out it was a  hill and ditch earthwork, that had been plowed flat over the hundreds of years, so much so, that it dont exist now Smiley. still managed to find bronze age pieces though Wink
