Every year on my birthday I take the day off work and go in hunt for what our forefathers have left behind. This year was my 7th year of doing so and so far to date I have always been rewarded with silver in one form or another.

I met Jaydogg, Mark and Rob on a site that they have had for a while with a good Roman pedigree. Into the fields we headed and the first find of the day fell to Rob in the shape of an ornate fibula that unfortunately has been a tad damaged. Not to be outdone I joined the Roman theme with a bit of a fibula and a Romanus Grotius with the profile not too bad.

The next find was a special one for me as I don't often find complete fibulas (well nearly complete). I dug the two way signal and within the first spade could see some green staring back at me! A cracking fibula with a little bit of blue enamelling and the spring still remaining! I was well pleased to say the least.

Mark and Jaydogg were equally in amongst the Romans, each finding a few more grots with profiles to add to the collection. Mark also found a spur rowl, a decorated bronze pin head and Jaydogg a silver sixpence.

We retired to the cars briefly to toast my age with a glass of Bubbly, much to the bemusement of passing motorists.

Heading back into the field I found a 17OO's buckle and another grot. Just as I was about to head home, the silver birthday luck struck again and out popped a Georgian silver cuff stud. Not my greatest find, but 'll take it to keep the tradition going.

Thanks to Rob, Jaydogg and Mark for joining me - a great day out guys.

Cheers
Neil
