Out of curiosity - what is the key shaped thing next to it? I recognise it but for the life of me can't remember what it is.

Your guess is as good as mine Neil, I'm the same as you in that it looks familiar but I just can't place it. I don't think it's that old despite the patina as it's been cast and all of the old Medieval keys I've found have been hand forged, also the more I look at it the more I think it is the working end of something and not the handle that I first thought.

It's a slide lock key, probably 9th to 11th century, and a very nice find, see here:

Went through my Saxon and Viking book to no avail and even flicked through a few Treasure Hunters last night! Very well ID'd Peter - even if you did miss it in the first photo! Grin Wink
