I've found a few of these buttons near where I live. Its odd that there's no corrosion on it. Any ideas on metal? Or period? Is it military?
Thanks
Rob

Buttons like this are usually made of tombac, like these:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showcat.php?cat=104&page=3&si=tombac&perpage=12&sort=1

Tombac is about 80% copper, with 5-20% zinc. See here:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showcat.php?cat=104&page=3&si=tombac&perpage=12&sort=1

Pewter buttons are also found, but are usually much more corroded in the ground. Pewter is largely made up of tin, with small amounts of other metals (copper, antimony, bismuth or lead)
