hello peeps . i have recently been told by an elderly relative of mine who lives 3 doors up from me that back in the 80's he used a metal detector at the bottom of his garden and found a lot of musket and small canon balls.he told me that he was told by a local that when oliver cromwells army passed through wales they camped in our area ( the bottom of our garden ).could this be true?i have read that he passed through swansea on his way to mid wales but did he stop in ammanford?could make sense ,maybe ammanford was the best place to cross the river amman or maybe they did'nt cross the river and followed it up tha amman valley to brynaman and went over the black mountain to llandovery? ?any info is much apreciated. if this is true we will have to have a rallie in the field at the bottom of my garden.lol.cheers mike Smiley

Yes Oliver Cromwells army did come through South and West Wales. I found this out when doing Family History. It was an ancestror of mine, Colonel Thomas Horton, who marched 3000 troops through to Tenby and laid siege to the castle. He was joined by Oliver Cromwell with more troops 15th May 1648. Cromwell left some troops at Tenby and continued west to Pembroke. I haven't found any mention of the exact route they took but I know they were north of me at Wiston as well as south. I live just north of Tenby.
I found a musket ball (I think) at the week-end not far from where I found the Rabbit net weights and wondered if it could be one of thiers. There is an old cottage nearby that is listed as 'Cromwells Office' and is a grade 1 building, so it makes one wonder.

Up in the Welsh Marches near the Roman town of Stretton Grandison there is a circular boudary encompassing the Roman Road. It is called Cromwells Walls. It makes you wonder what is there as names do tend to give an insight to folklore and usage of past times.
