Out on one of our local farms with Handyman this morning and unearthed a nice little brooch. Trouble is the hallmark is unfamiliar to me. Can anyone (Peter?) help with the origin or age?

I think Al is right.  .625 is pretty poor silver and only Germany comes up on google as a possible

It's not silver though Geoff, it's Gold.

Just had an id on the hallmark from another forum. Chester 1917, made by Francis Butt. But many thanks for looking anyway.

Thats gold mate - common in Australia - 15ct - here comes the science!

This was a British Commonwealth standard for a high carat, strongly yellow and reasonably hard gold that was used in pieces that had a lot of wear like bracelets, chains, etc but high quality gold was still required.
It was discontinued in England as a gold standard in 1932 with the Commonwealth member countries soon following.
SO if you do happen to find a piece of 15ct gold you can nearly be absolutely sure its made before 1932.
