Find those hot spots .. With a new field I tend to do what I call a quick scan I don't mean swinging at 100 mph mind, still slow but quicker than normal to find where the hot spots are also keep an eye on the ground for pot shards these are good signs as are oyster shells etc..

If I think I have found a hot spot then I really do a slow search this pays dividends In the end It's a simple technique but one that does work..

Also don't be afraid of coming out of your comfort zone with detector settings play with the sensitivity and try and gain some more depth this will also give you clues how the soil conditions are, On the feld you are detecting boost your confidence by not being afraid to turn settings, up or even down In trashy areas or heavy mineralized areas, Remember that backing off your sensitivity can pay dividends also..

Listen to your machine and what the soil conditions are telling you..

Good advice Jack. just one more point , if you do have hot spots on a field (an area where nice finds seem to come up) there will be other nice sporadic finds on the field in question
