I need a new camera with a good macro function also compact enough to be carried in the field, anyone know of a good model that wont break the bank.

Fred, I use a Canon S5IS. That is an "I" not a one. It does very well at Normal, Macro and Super Macro distances. It has a good telephoto and will record video with sound. I've had it a couple of years, and carry it in the field. It's bulkier than some, but it does what I need. If my memory is correct, I believe it cost about $229.00 from Amazon.com. Canon probably has a newer version out now. Skip

Thanks for the reply Skip
I checked and Amazon UK still have that model at £275 but like my Nikon D40 its a bit bulky for in the field, my daughter bought me a Canon  powershot A480 for fathers day & its just the job.
Light and easy to use including great 1cm macro shooting, has a lot of other nice features too & a bargin at £60 in Argos   Wink
