Found this on the Saturday rally day.  It's a George II  shilling but the shield side is of a George I guinea.  It has been gilded gold and has some of it missing.

It's an interesting coin Mark. When I saw it on the day I thought it was a shilling that had been gilded in an attempt to pass it off as a guinea, but as you say the reverse is not right. I'm wondering if it is a total forgery. If so, it's a pretty good one apart from the two sides not matching.

My thoughts exactly Peter, a real shame its broke though, and closest I have come to finding a guinea, maybe next time.

Great find mate - I bet the old heart was pumping when the gold side was glittering in the hole.

Very strange coin - just goes to show you never know what will turn up.

I am back in the UK now - I'll get in touch with you and Johnny in the week.

Cheers

Hi Alan, I think I know what you mean with the gaming pieces,  have found a few myself, but they all tend to be of Geo III rather than Geo II, and bear nonsense descriptions and are made of copper, but this "coin" is made of silver.  As Peter said, if its a forgery, its a pretty good one.
