yes kev i think you may be correct as the lettering seems to be that of richard ii.
the cross pattee also on edward 3 but letters are different.
i think peter will  confirm your id .
seaby  (1672/3 and 1677) type  near fine with damage and clipped heavily around the whole coin.

It's a great find, but due to the pictures being blurred I can't give an ID yet. The obverse (shield side) doesn't look right to me and seems to begin with "Ph"

I notice you've been asked to provide better pictures for UKDFD. Any chance of some larger sharper pictures on here as well please?

Peter here's a more clearer pic of the noble. it does seem to start with "Ph" though the "h" is slightly clipped. got me completely stumped anyway.
have tried to replace photo on ukdfd will have to wait as "exceeded my quota of 1 record per day".
any ideas peter?

Dont talk to me about ring pulls ...if i had saved all the ones i have dug and weighed them in i'd be able to buy a quarter noble!

kev thinkmy dads' taking it to swansea archaeologists today. Early thinking is its a forgery or foreign but causing a bit of a stir. still awaiting for authentication  on ukdfd site. if Rod's not sure then thats something cos that guy is amazing re: coin Id's.
he even got Nigel nicholson  involved and neither are totally sure. will keep you in touch anyway

just noticed this on ukdfd. seems to raise more questions than answers:-
coin has titles of
philip the bold, duke of normandy and count of flanders but arms of England.
even if its an imitation its very interesting i think.
