Debs i'll answer for be achboy ( his laptop is at my sisters, so he's offline all week). as for bea ches my dad has detected on bea ches from lydney  to darkest west wales from time to time, and everywhere on the gower. taking me to a few that took nearly 30 mins to walk to!
as for times, depends, if you are looking for recent finds at top of beach in "dry" sand anytime will do. otherwise to get to the lower end of the beach obviously you have to wait for low tide!
a good tip is to do some research on the beaches you plan to visit, where there any fairground rides there years ago? deck chair stalls?
or going further back try and find out if trading vessels beached in certain areas to offload their cargo for trade.
