Could someone explain to me why multitone allegedly works better/deeper ? than 2 tone. It it only better as a discriminatory tool or does it actually pick up smaller deeper signal. if it does work better ...How does it ?

I can't see how the tones can make a difference on depth, but the benefit of multi tone helps to identify targets, obviously the higher the conductivity of the target the higher the tone, for example: Bronze and copper alloy gives a high tone as do large silver coins, thin silver coins, gold, lead etc give a lighter softer tone.

If I am mistaken with the depth issue I am sure I will get shot down very shortly    Embarrassed  Grin

If your using multi, especially in conductivity, you will pick up the faint growl on a deep hammered that you'll miss in two tone, as that growl wont exist, but it does depend on how your machine is set up, for that to work for me, i have to have the threshold set at 20, Volume gain @30,Variability @30, threshold tone @ 1 (never higher) and good cans, i use chef phones.
None of this makes it go any deeper, it just makes it possible to hear the deep stuff. Wink

Rob it's not any deeper its to do with where the axis are on both cond and fer, the conduct axis is far more stable than the ferrous therefore the running in conductive tones rather than ferrous gives less room for miss reading when in the soil. multi tones then also add percentages to to the numbers (almost half numbers) so if an object is in the soil close to ferrous objects there is a greater chance of you hearing the different tone it will make, even running in smooth or long can amplify the difference. Testing in air is not going to give you any of the various factors that may make a signal veer off from where it should be but veer off they do, due to iron, mineralisation, emi etc but nearly always they move along the ferrous axis which in two tone takes your good signal and dumps it in the ferrous sounding area.

2 tone will find 98% of the stuff that multi tone will find and is great for beach work and park coin shooting but if searching for deeper and sometimes tiny cut pieces of coins then 2 tone just can't compete.

Grin I forgot to mention to use smooth, or long, but smooth is my preference Smiley
