Hey Doc

I found this at the last DW rally - I think its a Radiate Barberous coin of Claudius II - can you shed any more light on it please?

I showed it to you at the Rally when you also showed me your stunning fibula (was it the Severn Variety I guesseed it might be after? Roll Eyes)

Cheers for any help

Neil

Thanks Alan - that book you have may be worth getting [whats the full title?} as the three I have are good for denarii, but poor on other coinage.

I am going to have a chat with Deb about your guess speaker idea for Scan Club. good idea and Great to see you again at DW 13 - always a pleasure.

the book is called

"identifying roman coins"  richard reece & simon james

the ISBN number is 1 902040 406 -- a good 2nd hand one on ebay is about £10 --

its a quick reference guide - but all hand drawn.

cheers

alan

ps -- i've always got good ideas!!!!!!!!!!!!!  but the speaker was wonderful, enthusiastic and extremely knowledgable. i think every detectorist should be made to attend his talk - they will soon realise how the BM and PAS actually value the immense contribution that detectorists are making to the understanding of our heritage

I agree it's Claudius, here is a similar one, but silvered:

Claudius II Gothicus Silvered AE Antoninianus. Rome mint. IMP C CLAVDIVS AVG, Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Reverse VIRTVS AVG, Mars standing left, holding branch and spear, shield at feet. RIC 109, Cohen 313
