based on the diademed head, i would say it was 4th century, probably house of constantine, but i have seen similar lettering on the obvers, on vespasian coins.

my doubt is that the face doesn't appear to fit that of vespasian .. so i'm leaning towards the house of constantine period.

cheers

what do u think pete?

It would'nt be a denarius if it was 4th century, it could be a siliqua though.

I believe this is a coin of Valens or Valentinian I. Can we see the obverse?

Thanks Alan. I can't find an exact match, but looks like a siliqua of Valens:

Constantinople mint. 364-367 AD. Obverse: DN VALENS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: RESTITVTOR REIP, Emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum with hook on shaft, and Victory on globe. CONS in exergue.

The R of REIP appears to be missing.

Great find Smiley
