Hi Pete

Not sure how good you are with this sort of thing but a second opinion is always advisable.  I found this today and am not sure what it is.  I have the feeling it’s possibly Roman or maybe slightly later in date.  I can’t find anything similar online; it just has that look about it.  It has minute traces of gold gilding and the second inner circle has a pattern of lozenge or triangular shapes. Any ideas?

It's a bit hard to tell from the picture. What size is it? It could be the remains of a Roman disc brooch, but can't see any evidence of a pin or catchplate on the back.

Hi Pete

Its five cm in length.  Nice guess Kane but I don’t think it’s 16th-17th c.  It has a very similar style and form to a Hiberno-Norse (insular) strap-end (c.9-11th.c) I found and is in the same area.  There is no catch at all on the back.

It’s hard to tell which part is the end but it looks as if a fragment from the one side (5-o-clock: first picture) has decayed, which was probably the same shape as its opposite side.  Going to take it to the museum soon to get it recorded and to see what Mark thinks.

hi, that bronze item is nice!  Wink is very similar to this i found on a scan rally, it is a saxon terminal from either a pennanular brooch or a pin terminal, still needs to pick it up from mark. he said it is a very rare find for wales and he might publish it, was your find found in wales?? Wink

I wish he was Shocked. Pete said Roman not Saxon, and that it may be a brooch is disputed. Nice one James, yea it was found in Wales.  Don’t suppose you remember my Viking strap end from a while ago; I'll post a picture if your interested, but you may have seen it at the Scan Club a while back?  The design is very similar and this was found close to that.  Funny enough, Mark said the same "it's a rare find" about my Viking artefact and "it will be on display and published".  Your artefact is very similar to mine, cheers for the photo Grin
