Having seen a handful of Cnuts found at an archaeological site I think it is a short cross penny possibly of the Thetford mint but with out seeing it at first hand I could not be 100% sure on that mate. But I would agree on the date 1016 - 1035 with Rob.

Great find. Looks like Spink 1159, but the lettering on the reverse appears very crude. Needs to be seen in the flesh really. I wonder if it could be a contemporary Hiberno-Norse imitation? Worth showing to an expert such as Edward Besly at the museum in Cardiff.
