Thats a cracking find. does it have the small hole to put the black powder in to fire it? Amazing what kids were allowed to do compared to now.

Hi neil
all my finds over 300 years old are recorded with CPAT
ths find was made approx 2 years ago
I have used many different detectors over the years and this one was found with the good old hawkeye on a stubble field six to eight inches down
 still use the hawkeye and the goldmaxpower three and a rapier

Thanks for the reply Glynkid. I am pretty sure there was no trigger in the first place, as it would have had a a piece of metal joining the two jutting out bits together like in the photo attached. The black powder would have gone at the rear of the barrel or slightly to the side, like in the photo attached. Light and stand back. they used to fire them at lead shy cocks as well as anything else. I believe they are originally French in design and very collectable.

thats a great find glynkid......i googled it and it came up with PETRONEL..spelt that way....described as a 16th/17th c horsemans peece (sic)...that developed into the pistol/carbine....apparently petronel is something to do with the chest ,in french, and it was fired from a sling across the chest.....well found....byron
