do u mean north beach or west beach?

north beach is mostly pebbles unless u r by the pier. west beach is reasonable.

make sure u have the crown detecting permit as the beaches are patrolled by the local harbourmaster team.

cheers

Your best bet is waiting for a big tide . The water doesn't move very far so the sand deposites build up very quickly . If you can't see the rocks the sand is too deep !
                                Good luck !
