I bought this at an auction in the Copthorn Hotel in 2001

The plan was to bring it back to its former glory, but I have never got around to it. I presume its dated 1808 as thats stamped on the stock. Fires musket balls and lives on my windowsill in my bedroom. Has some damage to it - not sure where to start repairing it.

Anyone have any idea if its military or for personal use? Jonola help mate?

It's a nice looking musket Neil, It looks a bit small for military use so I would think more for hunting, the 1808 stamp I think is a patent number or an armourers stock number as it's a percussion cap rifle which wasn't invented in that form until 1814.

Thats really interesting Geoff - I admit I know nothing about muskets. I just liked it at the auction and no one else bid (which is how I buy a lot of things! Grin}

neil just looked in my arms book and it could be a musketoon. thats a british enfield
pattern1800 to 1856 what i got is a musketoon a british rifle adapted and cut back for cavalry
use. hope that helps .
