After 32 years detecting I should know the answer to this but to be perfectly honest I don't.

While looking at the ADS website for local historic areas I found a reference to a road side Fair site that was still holding fairs in the 18th century, the "fair field" is now a car park for a private care home, so obviously that is a no go, but between the fence to the home and the road there is about a 10 to 20 meter gap that is thinly wooded with old large trees.
The care home said it's not theirs, so any idea if this type of land (bordering a road) belongs to the highways authority or another branch the local council?

I have had dealing with the council before as far as permission is concerned and failed but was told unofficially had I just detected and made sure I left a very clean and tidy site I would probably of been able to detect without anyone being any the wiser. So if it is the council I'll just have a go until I get asked to stop.

Any ideas gladly received.

Thanks Simon if you get any results, you'll definitely go to the top of my Christmas card list. I do use the land registry but on this occasion it isn't listed on there. the fields on either side of the road are but there is a wide area on both sides of the road which are basically overgrown and left untouched.
