by the look of it, its a celtic 'gold' stater -- but they sell for well into the hundreds!

the price worries me - why so cheap?

well worth asking and recording it with the FLO anyway, even if the findspot is not known

This is why I want to know more, I'll get it from him and get Mark Lodwick to have a look at it.

Looks like a Gold Stator to me mate, if it's genuine it could be worth a lot of money, your mate had a bargain there Simon  Wink

Was it bought from Ebay? if so a lot of them, when not fake are coming in from eastern Europe. Without lineage an FLO should not record it.

Ive since found out yes it was bought on ebay and asked who he bought it from, I checked the list of known fake coin sellers and that seller on the list  Undecided

He had not paid for the item yet so I told him to email him and explain that hes on the fake list and cancel auction.

excellent research and very well done indeed simon for finding the excellent links.

i've spent an hour checking through spink and other books for the design - and have yet to find a similar match.

glad to hear that your friend has yet to part with any money... he owes u a pint at least!

cheers

Well done Phil for the ID  Kiss , the coin was being sold under "Coins > British > Hammered > Celtic Coins (c.100bc - c.100AD)"

So even if its not a fake hes not going to buy it on the grouds of a misleading sale.
