TREASURE dating back more than 300-years-old was uncovered in Gwent during the last 16 months.

A gold finger ring, a silver gilt pinhead and a silver gilt dress hook were declared as treasure at an inquest at Gwent coroner’s court.

All three items were found by metal detectors and handed over to Dr Mark Redknap, curator of medieval and later archaeology at the National Museum of Wales.

Dr Redknap said only round 10 or 20 of these types of finds are made in South East Wales a year.

All three items contain 10 per cent precious metal and because they are at least 300 years old they fall within the definition of treasure according to the Treasure Act 2006.

The gold finger ring was found on January 17, 2008 in Mathern by Tony Blackley.

The posy ring was made of gold with Latin italic script meaning “gift of a most beloved friend.”

The lettering on the ring dates it to between around 1560 and 1610.

Dr Redknap said most of these rings were used for fashion and as a new year’s gift or courtship ring.

He said the ring gives a unique glimpse of the decorative style of personal ornaments.

But said decorative enamel on the ring would have come away over time.

The silver gilt pinhead was discovered by David Manley on September 10, 2008 in Michaelstone-y-Fedw and is thought to date back to the late sixteenth century.

Dr Redknap said this would have been used as a dress fastening to hold up garments.

The silver gilt dress hook was uncovered in Wentloog by James Manley ( myself ) on October 7, 2007.

This type of fashion accessory dates back to the sixteenth century and were used to hold up women’s clothing out of the mud.

Dr Redknap said the hook is elaborately decorated and is not a common find in this area.

Newport Museum has expressed an interest in the pinhead and the dress hook and Chepstow Museum has expressed an interest in the finger ring.

The three items have not yet been valued but will be valued by an independent valuation committee and the finder and landowner will be informed.

Once a final valuation is agreed by all parties, the museums which have expressed an interest in the items will then have the chance to find the funding for them.
