Mike,i`m sure someone will correct me if i`m wrong but i found a 1697 coin & although over 300yrs old i didn`t have to report it to FLO as it was a single find. How ever if i had found 3 or more as old or older in the same vicinity then i would of had to report it.So i think you need not worry mate.

No need to report it Mike - its yours to keep - enjoy it mate.

Its a nice find - even better with the background to lovetokens I told you about!

Broke a blokes heart that did back in the late 1600's! Wink

hi guys

it's always worth recording all finds as its important for the FLO to develop the archaeological mapping of finds onto maps for future reference as to what has been found in certain fields.

our FLO will help us identify fields which have had finds recorded so we can identify the pattern of finds and help us to concentrate our searching.

i would recommend that all finds are recorded as its our heritage that we are talking about. the finds are returned to the finder for keeping.

i hold the view that failure to record our heritage is nothing short of raping the land of its finds for personal gain. there is no harm in recording the heritage.the more that do so, the better the reputation of detectorists.

please record the finds.

one way you can record the find is to take good quality pics of the object, state the size and weight, plus give a 10 fig grid reference [gps system], or go to google earth and locate the field and note down the northings and eastings of the find spot.

then email the local FLO with the info, they will guide you from there.

Lads just a pointer, recording finds with FLO,and reporting treasure finds are two different things, recording finds that are over 300 years old with FLO is a voluntary thing, you don't legally have too, but  reporting a treasure find is a legal obligation,But before recording you need the landowners consent to do so,after all it was found on there land and could be argued is their property,The harm is that the recording of finds without the landowners knowledge could cause the landowner future problems,i.e in grant applications,or planning applications.Neil just out of interest is there an agreement with the landowners about keeping finds and recording of finds from the rallies ?.

excellent points made there Simon. I would add a comment that recording finds and artefacts could help prevent future development of land by external developers,

we have such a case going on in our area, where 10 000 houses are proposed, yet due to our diligent recording, we have managed to put up a robust defence on 3 of the 4 proposed sites. the farmer is very pleased with our support as he doesn't want to lose the land for devpt.

incidentally the distrcit council was hoping to cream off £20 000 per house, from the developers, into their coffers, if such a devpt goes ahead.

please record all finds.

the Portable Antiquity Scheme has county wide representatives called the 'Finds Liaison officer'.

i would suggest you search out portable antiquity scheme and read up on what they do nationally, then look up your county representative and make contact with them.
