Well done Steve, you are correct.

This coin has a number of features which narrow down the ID:

1. Edward I and II pennies never have shoulders to the bust. If you find a hammered penny with shoulders then it is later.

2 The legend reads EDW R' ANGL' DNS HYB. This legend is only found on Edward I pennies. If you find something which starts EDWA, EDWAR or EDWARD then it could be Edward I, but also might be Edward II, III or IV.

3. The crown on Edward I and II pennies is always an "open" design like this (from a different coin). The side fleurs can have three lobes like these (called trifoliate) or two lobes (bifoliate). Trifoliate crowns are usually Edward I:

hi dave have you noticed the legend is in large letters , on your they are in small and the crown tilts to the left on one and right on the other

I was going to add more ID tips. So far we have ID'd it as Edward I from the legend and with crown as a backup

4. The letters C and E are of an open type, even though it is hard to see this on the coin. This generally means Class 1 to 5.

5.The letter S is egg-waisted, which are found in Classes 3f to 8a.

6. The easy bits are the three pellets on the neck and the pellet in the reverse legend, which pinpoints it exactly to Class 4e, but even without this you should be able to identify the coin as being somewhere between Class 3f and 5.

The reverse is easy, reading CIVITAS LONDON. The mintmark can be a help because some mints only issued coins in some classes, but London coins were issued in EVERY class apart from 3e and 9c.
