Any idea Peter - John thinks its before the birth of the late JC -  and I am inclined to agree after reading all my books!

Cheers

Lovely coin Neil  Smiley Its a roman republican coin, looks like Trebanius 135bc, head of roma, Republican coins can come in hoards, or maybe from a early military site, well done.

Hi John - thanks for the ID as well.

Not sure I have a photo of it? Is it the item you showed me in the car? I think we forgot to take a picture of it.

Happy christmas

I think you are all wrong, obviously the MAS is missing on the profile side , so obviously it is a profile of XMAS (the young father xmas of course) and he started off using horses (reverse) but found that they hadn't got the stamina of reindeer.  Grin Merry Christmas all!

Very nice coin Neil. I've clearly got competition in the ID game on here Grin

However, I don't think you can say this is a denarius of Trebanius unless there is clear evidence of the lettering as shown on here. Also the figure in the biga is different:

http://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php?LotID=159074&AucID=194&Lot=319

If there is no lettering visible, then I think it could only be described as an "un-named denarius" with Victory in a biga reverse (note the wings which indicate that it's Victory rather than another driver). Date likely to be c.189-170BC.
