This has been bugging me for some time found on a known
roman site i have had a half hearted I.D.from a magazine"expert"
as a handle from a roman item knife/mirror etc but has in general
stumped everyone i have asked including UKDFD.
So any ideas please Nb* I suggested a rein guide from a cart?
But this was discounted...PaulB.its 25 x 35 mm cast copper alloy

Interesting one that DB, if it is a rein guide is the wear there on the inside of the item where the reins would have chafed? Did it have an iron fixing at the base? Nice find!

I wouldn't know what that is but it does look interesting & I'm sure I've seen similar in one of the Metal Detecting magazines!

No wear at all where you would expect it
but there is iron staining at base PaulB. Cool

Hiya DB , I did think key at one point , but it doesn't make sense because it should be a complete loop not a broken one. The ridge at the base is similar to what you will find on some roman keys, but it makes sense the way that you have photographed it that it was mounted with the loop vertical to show off the patterning, but as a mount on anything that still doesn't make sense because it is not a complete loop on the top. I keep thinking that it may have been mounted on top of a Roman helmet (to signify being part of a group i.e. ethnic or religious). Of course that is total speculation, if anyone can come up with another suggestion as to its use I would be very interested. Steve Huh
