i applied and got a response last week, within 24hrs. they sent a map indicating the beach areas that they owned [marked in red].

i contacted Iain Mills direct and got a very helpful and courteous reply.

Iain.Mills@thecrownestate.co.uk

hope this helps
cheers

most beaches are owned by the crown estate, hence the need to approach them for permission. the permit is free.

always indicate which area of the uk you intend to detect on and you will get a map in return [pdf file], of the area clearly indicating where the crown owns the land.

eg swansea and gower - beach land is owned by others - eg national trust, council. however neath valley and pembrey round to northern tip of cardigan bay - is all owned by crown estate.

there is a new permit system being developed, and it is still in its early days. hence the present system reliant on emailing Iain Mills.

soon we will be able to do it all online and get an instant response. All this information has been printed in 'the searcher' over the past few months, along with regular updates by NCMD.

When i requested a permit from the Crown it took no time at all to sort.
I can only assume the relevant person to be contacted ( Iain Mills ) is otherwise engaged or on holiday...Huh
Just gotta keep trying mate, they will answer I'm sure in their own good time...... Huh

they can stick their permit where the sun dont shine. it might be free at the moment but if enough people apply for one they will twig on they can make from them. and how do they own all these beach's did they buy them from the public and what are your rights due to the magna carta. mike

Im with you Mike why dont they make kids apply for permits ?

They make bigger holes than Detectorists, and what about Dogs in the Winter months ?

It seems you can build a 10 foot tall Sand castle or dig and hole the size of the Grand Canyon and have a poo on the beach but you cant swing a battery powered stick with a polo mint stuck on the end of it with out a permit.

Ive been Beach Hunting for roughly 10 years and ive never heared of anyone being in any trouble detecting without a permit ,ive been moved on a few times tho lol
