This site has a nice section on the nicknames picked up by various sections of the British Army in the 1800's.

I particularly like "The Cherry Pickers"...cavalry attacked by the French when they were picking cherries so they had to fight on foot

and the "Rusty Buckles" ( they didn't make a good showing at a parade in Ireland).

Thanks Brian I've added it to my favourites. Smiley.

If you click on "Military Subjects" in the heading and then click on "Great Britain" on the left there's loads of interesting info about the British Army in the 17 & 1800's.
