Nihi nisi sub sole

On my newest permission there are some potato fields - which I have been tempted to detect (I'm hoping the potatoes have been lifted now) - running alongside a roman road. Problem is that the fields opposite (in any direction) are empty - and from what I have heard from the locals, it seems some non-sanctioned detecting might have happened over the years there too. Probably will still have a look purely for the deeper turning over of the soil that happens.

It's 1000 acres all told, but it gets progressively more dispiriting if you (almost) always end up with nothing.

I know where your coming from any new permission is exciting but yes it is dispairing when a site as so much history and promise only to go there and find very little. There used to be a time research of a site used to produce associated finds. In my opinion research counts for very little these days. But like any other land you have to go and at least have a look.as for none sanctioned detecting it happens everywhere  by many its not my cup of tea but its become so common place that most places with good history has had some nocturnal visits I know.. But again it's a problem that will get worse now sites are drying up and permissions harder to get( some people just don't bother getting permissions full stop)
