So - I haven't started a post on here for ages, but I at last found something worth posting Smiley

I should find more at this site, but finds seem quite rare / spaced out, so was quite surprised with this little hammered (one of only two coins for the whole day, the other of which was a 1773 1/2 penny!).

It's a Charles I gold crown (5 shillings or 60 pence) with mm Sun - 1645-6 - struck by parliament at the tower - seems a rarer type as I can only find one with this mm online.

Enjoy Smiley

Thanks all - it certainly made my weekend Smiley

It's really nice to find something special like this - and I will have to go back and grid a lot more of that field......last time I found a gold hammered, there were a few more Smiley

This was found with my Nox 800 btw - using Field 1, and some settings I randomly found on Youtube - it came in as an 11/12 - just like the ring pulls I thought it was - especially when I saw the edge of it in the clod Cheesy

And to think that I was looking for roman and saxon at this place!

Now that's a lovely coin Roly!!  First one I've seen.  Well worth the wait and the hours of searching.  Fabulous.  What sort of depth was it with the Nox?  Thanks for posting.  Tom.

It was within the clod - so less than a spade's depth - I'm pretty sure I cut a slice off the bottom of the clod too - so no more than 4 or 5 inches.

It had all the hallmarks of being a ring pull - fairly shallow - when I saw the first bit of metal in the soil it just looked like the edge of a ring pull Smiley then I thought - oh god not another quarter noble - as that's pretty much what I found before - so I was really quite excited for me to get a Charlie - only my third hammered of Charles too.

I'm wondering if the damp conditions of the previous few days, along with a nice day on Saturday helped, it was a really clear signal - I know I have walked near that spot before as I went there with my brother a few months ago.

That's  a lovely  coin indeed.  I think Charles coins are some of the best  ever minted, the designs are beautiful.  Well done, keep  them  coming .

thanks guys Smiley

I've been researching it all week - I found one with the same mm in the Brooker collection (no. 225) - but mine is from different dies (and has some extra pellets!) - the Brooker one was also in the Locket collection and seems to have recently been sold by Sovereign Rarities.

I'm itching to go back - but I'm also thinking I should wait for the farmer to actually cut the fields I was going to look at too Smiley
