Hi everyone, been detecting today, gorgeous sunny day up here in Wales, felt like spring.Anyway, haven’t found anything exciting apart from the occasional old penny or musket ball but I noticed the field was absolutely covered wall to wall covered with pottery of all sorts.Little shards of handpainted China, glazed shards of brown pottery, loads of bird of clay smoking pipes and glass, like old glass, full of bubbles.
Can’t get me head around it.
Tried to ask the farmer but he was on grumpy mode, better leave him alone I thought.I don’t think he cares much about the place history.More things to worry about. So anyone can shed a light on this?
Thanks

lots of pottery and the like can mean many things - at the very least it tells you that some one has been there.

Can you upload some pictures of the pottery - it might help put a date on it - as even blue and white ware spans several centuries.

Hi mate,I’ll do that,it’s just I was trying to understand the reason of the field being covered with pottery and glass. Some fields I do have the odd spot but like this one I never saw anything like this.

It's possible the field was an old quarry and it has been back filled - there's a site I go to at the moment, where there is up to 5 foot of modern debris on the land surface - as it happens over a roman villa Sad -  in the ploughed field next to it - again the site of an old quarry lots of pottery, bricks, glass, rubbish - and the field then drops off to a flat area where there is nothing.
