Sorry Greg, I haven’t got a clue. Nothing like I’ve seen relating to modern day riding or driving.
Designs don’t change much in the Equine world and it doesn’t look that old.

Thanks Val, agree it’s fairly modern.
Possible identification on another Detecting site, side piece of a Liverpool driving bit and the reversible sliding mouth bit (missing) is the thing that broke it in half, after 1800.

Absolutely spot on Greg. As soon as I read that it clicked.

I must admit that’s not the first time I haven’t recognised a ‘bit’. My very first decent find was a copper bit with one side ring. I was convinced it was buckle till I showed it to one of my riding friends. She, of course recognised it immediately. Doh  Embarrassed

Liverpool driving bit is spot on.  There are an identical pair on some tack in one of the stables at Erddig Hall near Wrexham.

Wouldn't a copper bit have put a nasty taste in a horse's mouth?

Don’t know about the taste Chris but the thinking is the copper has a calming effect.
You can buy bits today with copper rollers on middle part.
I never had one for my horse. Didn’t need any calming. If he’d been any calmer he’d have fallen over ! Grin
