Could this be a medieval harness ring? it's quite heavy I know a couple of medieval finds have been found on the same field. Also found a shilling dated 1947, 1940 halfpenny and rolled up lead  Smiley

Nice few finds. I got a few of them rings and kept them simply because I don't know what they are.

Love those ship halpennies and  that’s in good condition. Poor old shilling, it’s seen some hard times.
Anyone’s guess what the ring was for. It’s definately older than usual and hammered flat on the sides. That’s unusual. Worth keeping.

Hi Beachhunter. I had something spinning around at the back of my mind when I answered your post. It suddenly came back to me a few minuets ago.
Do a google search for ‘Ring Money’ you may find it interesting. Grin

I’ve just seen something else worth looking into. A Medieval ring brooch, minus the pin. Just seen one like yours with flat sides and loop fitted pin.

Looks like you might have something for the FLO

Don’t know what area your in but if you search

www.finds.org.uk     Takes you to The Portable Antiquities Scheme

First page,,,,,,contacts. Lists every FLO in the country complete with phone numbers and e.mail addresses.
Phone is usualy the safest but e.mail usualy works. Include pics if you can and ask if they’re interested.

This one is not a ring brooch.

This type of roughly finished copper alloy ring is very common, and likely to have many uses as suspension rings, harness fittings etc.

These seem to date from medieval onwards. The idea that they are ring money I think is largely a fantasy propagated by sellers wishing to palm off old 'junk' finds as something valuable.

This summary is useful:

I have quite a few in my collection.  I found quite a few around old rabbit warrens. (Rabbit farms from 12th -early 20th century )
Most likely the old slip rings off rabbiting snares / nets.
The flat sided design is found all over the country and probably 16th to 18th century.
Nice to find them though.

I have also found very similar rings, and now I have been taken back to my 60’s ferreting days, I think you’ve got it spot on Ian.
