Me and Ron visited a new permission yesterday.  We did not know what to expect as according to the estate manager, this ground is undetected.  In fact they had never had a metal detecting request before, how rare is that these days?
The field nearest the house seemed the obvious place to start and on entering the pasture we were greeted by a dozen Roe deer (who soon hopped over the fence) and a very friendly donkey who just followed us around all day.  There is tumulus and Roman tracks on the estate, but we'll try those areas during our next visit.
What we found yesterday was a lot of scrap, lead, bullets etc.  and decent finds included a 1591 hammered silver Lizzie for Ron, a young head Victoria sixpence, couple of pre decimal sixpences, some grotty pennies and halfpennies, a partial fob seal, a great big iron key and musket balls and buttons.  Not a bad first visit.  Perhaps next time, who knows??
Cheers and Happy Digging!!!  Tom and Ron

NIce - it's always good to have some new ground to walk over.

I managed the end of a silver mustard spoon for the two hours I managed detecting last month - the first bit of silver cutlery I've ever found - I hope to find a whole one one day!....

Good grief Tom, that’s a ‘hole’ lot of digging  Grin was that just yours or combined ?
Looks like you’ve got another busy site though later dates than previous efforts.
That long handled spoon is really nice. Looks to be early 1800’s very nice.

Thanks Roly and Val.  Yes Val, don't know what to make of the site as yet.  A few more searches are needed to evaluate dates of finds and possible usage of ground in the area.  The Mrs. said she will add the long spoon to her small collection of love spoons hanging on the hallway wall.
Cheers and Happy Digging!!!  Tom
