Hi guys, I picked this up outside a badger set on one of my Roman sites. The bronze wire is defiantly ancient in colour and feel its also soft and pliable.

Feel free to add your thoughts.....Spikey

My guess is it once had a snare attached to it which would have been set in front of the entrance. The rock would have to be big enough so an adult badger would choke if it pulled.

Badger setts can be very, very big and also very very old. They are used by successive generations and expanded according to the number of inhabitants.
There’s an enormous one not far from where I live and an elderly neighbour told me it was there when he was a child and he remembered his father taking the terriers there.
That would take back to the late 1800’s
Another unthinkable,  badger meat was free !

Hi Greg about a 1ft X 10" x 2" thick., I can see where your coming from Val re-the snare however I am pretty sure it's a roof tile as Mike suggested. Possibly something has been suspended from it hence the bronze wire.... Wink

At that size even my mini Jack Russel would drag it so def not a snare anchor.
Maybe it had a bird feeder hanging from the roof j Grin

Don’t give up on the anchor idea, is there a river or lake nearby, could have been used to keep boat in position while fishing.
Stone anchors not unusual during medieval period (cheap and easy to make) for sea going vessels. So could also apply to freshwater vessels. Maybe.🤔
