I'm looking to start beach detecting again wet and dry and looking to get a dedicated used detector for this. The Minelab Sovereign GT has an excellent reputation but I'm concerned about waterproofing without going to silly Heath Robinson lengths! Is the Excalibur the same but a waterproof version? Or are there better options on the used/new market? Your advice from experience would be greatly appreciated.

Basically the Excalibur is a water proof Soverign.....If you don't plan on doing shallow water searching stick to a Soverign, Plenty of ways to protect it from wet weather.
I had one for years and never had a problem with water issues.

Hi Simond,yep!.. totally agree with Celticspikey,I owned a MINELAB Sovereign GT and never had any water ingress problems whatsoever, and I used it in all weather's it's a great beach machine, rated probably one of the best wet sand detectors  ever produced.
Just make sure you kit your self with the Minelab waterproof covers..and you I'll be fine.
Good hunting..👍

Soverign GT is probably in top 3 of Beach detectors ever made.

If you don't plan on going in the water, get the Soverign.
