Hi Folks
Ron celebrated his birthday in style yesterday, we went detecting!!!  We had ploughed and rolled fields everywhere.  The first field we tried only produced a few buttons and lead so we moved onto a field the other end of the estate.  After about twenty minutes of marching around the field Ron called me to say he'd spotted fragments of Roman pottery and tile on the surface, so we both started to grid an area of about 60 x 60 yards.  Ron found the first two coins, then I found a few, one of which was oval shaped with all inscription clearly visible.  Bits of lead, bits of copper, then my very first silver denarius, whoopee!!!  Really chuffed with it as it's in lovely condition.
Then Ron had an eyes only of a beautiful Roman brooch, something special for the birthday boy!!  Then another eyes only for Ron,
a fallow deer antler protruding through the soil.  Great, just what he wanted to make a couple of walking sticks.
Altogether from that small area we gathered fifteen Roman coins, the brooch and a few other bits and pieces.  All-in-all a lovely day and not a bad way to spend ones' birthday.  Ron reckons it is definitely better than sitting in the club (or in the house with the wife for that matter).  We will return to the field again quite soon I imagine.
Cheers and Happy Digging !!!
Tom.

Thanks guys for the lovely comments.  And, very witty, yes, Chris, I did sing Happy Birthday to Ron and he is a jolly good 'fallow'. We've been friends since childhood and long may it continue.
Cheers.  Tom.

Thanks Paul.  We're on a bit of a 'high' at the moment with the Roman finds, but you'll probably put us in the shade once your fields are ready.  We can only imagine what your collection of finds must consist of.  It must be quite considerable.  Perhaps you'd be willing to show us your collection one day.

Now have ID on my first denarius.  The denarius is of Domitian as Caesar (hence the Principi, meaning prince on reverse). Date-wise is around 69 - 79 AD.  The other nice coin is a Constantine follis.   We hope to find a few more when we hit the fields again this coming Saturday.
Cheers and Happy Digging Everyone!!  Tom.
