George that is a wonderful find...any chance you could bring it along to our next dig, I would love to see it and feel it lol.
important its recorded and I certainly don't think its 2 items...its one item in 2 halves. wonder if I would have dug it up as it was so deep?

hi ,regarding the find this will be the 3rd ever found in wales (I found the 2nd in December 2016 in Swansea)  and the 14th ever to be found in the uk
my mould is a palastave  axe sadly I could only find the one half of two congratulations on your  fantastic find by the way the first ever found was with a hoard of axes in bangor north wales in the 1950s

That's a fantastic find - thanks for sharing.

I'd always assumed that these moulds were made from clay or stone, although it is possible that the mould was used to make a wax model which was then covered in clay - using the 'lost wax' process.

A mate of mine has just found one half of a large axe mould, still searching for the other half. It has a leaf design on the outer side as would the other half, this enabled the owner to ID the moulds in order they matched. The 2 halfs of the moulds would be secured together before pouring the bronze straight into them to make the Axe.
