Hi Doc

Found this little beauty this morning and would appreciate confirmation of what i think is the ID.   

It's a silver roman denarii, [republic].  I believe the head is an image of Bacchus whilst the reverse is Ceres, holding 2 torches, on a chariot drawn by serpents.

I think it dates from 76 BC ... which makes it the oldest coin i have found to date.

Naturally i will be recording the find, but would appreciate any more info on it.  It all helps

Well found Alan. That's a belter of a coin and in great condition.
My first thought was the date fitted in with Julius Caesars invasion but after checking its 20 years before. That's an amazing find.

thanks for the comments Val & Chris.  Just an update, it appears that the coin date is 78BC, not 76BC as stated. Also, a search of the PAS database suggests that only 13 coins similar have been recorded on the database from across the country.   Nice to find a rare one, for sure!
