Hi all,I don't have yet a buckle book and I have found a few buckles which I am not sure about what they are and how old. Also found what I think is a strap end and a bullring,I think.Could anyone shed any light on the id's.
All the bronze coins that I found on my permissions, more than fifty by now, they all come out like discs of nothing.Im wondering if I ever find a roman one will come out in this conditions?!

Most of the buckles in your pic are off horse harness and I think would be about the same sort of age as the coins. I can see 186? On one of them. The half ring is a bull ring.
Farmers did and still do just dump stuff in the corners of fields. Always worth checking them out.
The coppers from that period don't seem to do well. It's because of the 'acid' soil. A Roman copper would probably be the same. You'll have to make sure you find a silver one o Grin

Cheers Val.Its a Victoria penny,1861 and you just about see Britannia above it.
The soil as been very dry and hard on my pastures and on the arable it's like volcanic rocks.I rather detect on winter time. The silage it's on now but soon the muck spraying will come and then the grass will be knee high again,so it's difficult to detect during the good weather because farming is seasonal too...

Sorry, just realised it's 14mb which might be too big for most inboxes so here's a link to it from my dropbox account - https://www.dropbox.com/s/61csbxgf9x9mutn/Whitehead%20Buckles.pdf?dl=0

You can download it from this page. I found this copy on the internet a while back.
