seek and ye shall find......ring pulls mainly!

« on: April 17, 2017, 12:34:20 PM »

Jordan, my Grandson, is 16.

He has autism that makes his life a challenge; in particular he finds it hard to become engaged with anything for long.

Yesterday I took him out (with great trepidation) metal detecting and he loved it...for three hours we worked just a small patch of pasture, had a picnic and enjoyed the sunshine.

Right at the end he had a lovely two way signal, pinpointed it and proceeded to dig a very large surgical hole...every bit had to be checked methodically ...at 6 inches down and 20 minutes later, he held up a worn but identifiable William third halfpenny!

When I told him how old it was he was delighted!

The coin now takes pole position on my finds shelf...and to be honest I think it might just be the best find ever.

Brilliant! My 12 year old has Aspergers so getting him to focus on anything is a miracle, when he does find something that interests him it's like an obsession though, can't think of anything better, fresh air, excercise, history, great stuff.

Nice one Myke. I work with adults (young and old) in the autistic spectrum and it's good to hear you had such a successful time out detecting. May have to give it a try it myself...

Hi Trefor,
I've worked in mental health for years. It helped because we went to an area he was very familiar with and we were able to take the dogs with us ...he also loves picnics. What really surprised me was the length of time he remained engaged with the idea of finding treasure....my genes are in there somewhere lol
