Found today on my first permission.
An Old coin but cannot work out what it is ?
green patina and 25 mm across.
The more i look at the top photo i can see Britannia
Perhaps this is an Early Roman Coin ??
Any ideas anyone.

Hey TJ, it looks like a George II Farthing, you can see part of Britannia's feet and shield and on the other side you can see the left facing bust! It looks like this coin was defaced on purpose rather than just being worn down over time. Dated somewhere between 1729-54.

What is the best way to clean this coin so i can see the date if possible ?
Some say toothpaste ? is that a good way of cleaning it ?

We have all done it, and I don't mean to be condescending, if it was me I would not bother, in a year or two, you will have bagfulls of them.
If you must, soak in cooking oil for a few weeks, then have another look.
Keep going silver will follow.

although Romans did use Brittania I don't think they dated any of their coins, and yours seem to have a date obscured....doubt it will clean up too well but have fun trying !!!

Yup, George II copper.

Apart from soaking in oil for a bit (to loosen any dirt), I don't clean coppers like this - they all have a pretty thick and flaky patina / corrosion layer and anything you are likely to be able to do to the coin will only make it look far worse.
