if your going to get one get a nvr system rather than a dvr system as thats the way forward , the dvr system is analogue and the older type, better picture quality with the nvr system - ive been looking at them lately and im going tommorrow to get this one at maplins as its 200 - 300 cheaper than anywhere else -

we have a Swann D1 DVR Analogue system which supports 8 cameras around the house and inside, the quality is good and with a large 1TB hard drive and the cameras set on motion only (except over car where its on all night) the system will take 3 weeks to overwrite old footage. the cameras need to be carefully placed to catch faces...otherwise the footage is of little use to the Police. (don't put them too high up on wall)
hard wired is much better than wireless.
we also put in an infrared flood light to improve night vision.
remote viewing on internet is an option, along with alarms to notify us.....last year we caught two thieves stealing bikes from neighbours and the footage was clear enough for the police to recognise them and use it in court to prosecute.
by the front door we used a small micro camera placed at eye level which has been very useful indeed!
top tip.....make sure the recorder is well hidden as thieves will take whole lot if they can find it, we have ours in attic and monitor in bedroom.
E bay deals can save hundreds...but the maplin deals are excellent too.
Oh the joys of living in Rhyl !
