Just before christmas I put up this black and white photo of an aerial view earthwork were I found the lead roman face and 9 sestertius. From the picture some of you thought  it looked like it might be a Temple? type earthwork as I did.  I wasn't totally convinced due to location however yesterday I was watching an old series of time team in which they were digging a roman fort and settlement in county Durham, on this they produced a survey of a very similar earthwork which they initially thought it was a temple, Guy De la Bedoyere disagreed, and thought it was a Mausoleum, this turned out to be true it contained a burial cremation and also 1 roman sestertius !. Given the lead face I was told could've come of a casket ? I am now wondering if in fact this is what might lie in the field my finds come from.
Just a thought but would welcome your views guys.. Wink Wink

Could be - but there are other times when they have found romano-celtic temples which have a similar shape - or signal towers, although I think this last is unlikely where you are I think.

I'm not sure the lead face would be from a casket either, as usually (from what I remember) most cremation burials are usually in glass or pottery vessels - at least from the roman period.

Hi Roland, good point on the casket theory. I'm pretty sure the signal towers is out due to location. I guess the only sure way is to have an archeological dig....

You could always ask - I've asked the farmer on the land I detect if I can run a trench across what I suspect is a roman building (roof tiles / bricks / artefacts / pottery / squared off building blocks, that type of thing) and he said yes - although I've got until May to do it as he is putting Maize in it this year.

Yes, I helped my parents on their amateur dig for 20 years or so, plus did a month in Israel with the British School of Archaeology, although my father forbade me to become an archaeologist as they don't earn anything (apart from appearing on telly), and spend all of their time outside in the rain.

Still doesn't mean that I can get away without some opprobrium - even though I said I would try out my resistivity probe first - and promised not to dig into any floors or anything.
