Andre,

yes the brooch is Roman it is of a type called a fibula, but there are many different types of this brooch

Re your next point I suppose a lot of it comes with experience and a lot of people have a good knowledge through an interest in a particular period in history. That's why forums like this are so good

As for research there are literally thousands of books on all different periods of history, but to be honest in this day and age "GOOGLE" is your best friend, I have a bookcase full of books but more often than not it is easier and quicker to Google.

I am sure if you visited your local library they would have a full section on whatever period or artefacts you want to research. I studied O level and A level history, I have been detecting for many years and I still always learn something new.

Hi Andre, like many of us on here I've been detecting for 30 years or more, so you as long as your in the rite areas and you have obviously ancient fields, put the time in and the finds will come, having found hundreds of brooches the ID becomes accurate, For any one interested in brooches the Richrd Hattatt books are a must..... Nice selection again - coins are fro around 270AD - I see a Tetricus, although it is a barbarous one as usual - through to mid 4th century.
