thanks nobby, i had some suspicion that it may be islamic calendar and indeed said so to my detecting buddy when it came out. So it dates to 1872.

its an interesting find for middle england!

thanks Wagis for your input as well.

Yep, I believe that it is a Moroccan 4 falus bronze coin. Spelled with an "F" and not a "Ph"!  Cheesy

Well some one has just found some roman coins in Japan (and I haven't been there, so I didn't drop them), so given people visit Morocco and buy stuff, it's an unusual, but not totally unexpected find Smiley

But why would Arabs have the star of David on their coinage?

During the 18th and 19th century, North Africa was colonized by France, UK, Spain and Italy. As the location of the find spot is not very far from a barracks used by the british army, in the 18th and 19th century, i would venture to suggest that the coin was dropped by a soldier returning to barracks after the campaign. Interestingly, my colleague found another one today, in the same field!.

As for the roman coins found in Japan, i read that story and think its a very interesting discovery indeed.

cheers

Just about as easy to understand as a Roman dagger being found on Oak Island.

I wondered the same as Resurgam about the Star of David on a Morrocan coin. Love finds like that. Well found Al

Yeh Val, I have a little bronze coin that I picked up in a Spanish flea market and I thought that was Jewish; that is until someone educated me. Perhaps the six pointed star has symbolism other than the Jewish "Star of David".
