Been laid of from serious detecting for some time now and have been chaffing at the bit. Despite having a static caravan on the coast and having upgraded from a spade to a sand-scoop, I have allowed the arthritis to dictate my unwillingness to hit the beach with the Safari.

The other week the wife persuaded me that we should take our grandson down to the caravan with us for four or five days. Just five, going on six, young Jamie can be quite a hand-full at times and he takes some keeping up with; taint all that easy when ya getting older.

Ah ha, thinks I; chuck the EuroAce and the small coil in the boot and Jamie and I can do quick scan of the grassy patch outside the caravan. Gave the little fellah the ProPointer and showed him how to use it. Instructed him that anything that the EuroAce detected and the ProPointer couldn't, we count as being too deep and anything that  sounded off on the pointer would be just right.

Set about slowly scanning the grassy patch and sure enough Jamie would call out too deep Granddad. Several false alarms and then; just right this one Granddad. With a little investigation and Jamie confirming exactly where the target was; we unearthed two rusty old wood screws! "WOW" Grandma, come see what we have found. Off he rushes into the caravan to show Grandma his newly found treasure. I don't think he would have been any more exited had he found a gold sovereign. I would have been dancing though.

Through the eyes of a child, eh?

Nothing more true Chris. They do have the knack of reminding us how wonderful the simplest things are.

I could hardly believe it; his eyes lit up like little beacons.

Will have to take him beach detecting for an hour, when the weather is fine. May, perhaps take him onto that Lama paddock. Oops turned out that those lamas were "alpacas". They all look the same to me!  Huh

Hi Ian,
I'm beginning to think that we detectorists still retain some of that childhood open mindedness and spirit of adventure, whilst we diligently search for buried treasure but we have become a bit jaded and are disappointed by rusty old wood screws.

I suppose, if we were to look at the figures, we would find our hobby predominantly made up of white adult males; suffering from strong buried treasure syndrome.  Grin

Ha Ha Chris I think you might be right but you forgot (or were too polite) to mention wrinkled old ladies who remember how it was to be a 'Tom Boy' back in the days before Internet and mobile phones and we all used to go play and be safe till our tummies said it was time to go home.

I did say Tom Boy Chris.  Make that climbing trees, shooting water rats with a catapult, racing the lads on bikes, dares. I once walked along a bridge parapet for a dare. Gives me chills thinking about it now but it was all good fun back then.

You are starting to sound more like my wife when she was a kid; she beat up the local bully and his dad called at the house to complain.  Shocked
