Thanks for the comments everyone - It has really got me excited about detecting again, because to be honest the spark had gone a bit in the last year or so.

Rod Blunt from UKDFD and Martin Allen from the Fitzwilliam Museum have been  very helpful in classifying the coin. The view is that it could be Southampton mint, where there was a moneyer Ęthelweard working at this time, but looks like it may never be certain.
